Senior Director of Project & Portfolio Management (AI/ML Drug Discovery)

Location: Hybrid in South San Francisco, California, with three days per week onsite at the headquarters

Salary: $264,000–$298,000 annually for successful US-based applicants, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus and equity incentive plan.

What you will do

• Build and lead an AI-forward project and portfolio management organization reporting to the CSO.
• Partner with Therapeutic Area, Operations, Clinical, Business Development, Compute, Finance, and project team leaders to advance drug candidates into the clinic.
• Develop integrated project plans and rightsized strategies spanning research, discovery, clinical development, software engineering, and data science.
• Establish governance, portfolio planning, decision-making, and resource allocation processes and tools.
• Lead cross-functional matrix meetings and manage project scope, deliverables, risks, budgets, timelines, and resources.
• Design and implement agentic AI project management workflows and methodologies across the portfolio.

Requirements

• BS degree in a life science field; MS or PhD preferred.
• At least 15 years of experience in biotech or pharmaceutical R&D and clinical development, including 8+ years leading projects or portfolios and cross-functional matrix teams.
• Extensive knowledge of drug development stages and deliverables, including translational research, CMC workflows, early commercial assessment, and clinical development from IND through Phase 2.
• Experience with project management, critical path analysis, scenario planning, budget and resource management, and project management software.
• Experience with governance, portfolio planning, decision tools, and agentic workflows in a pharmaceutical or biotech environment.
• Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement with three days per week onsite in South San Francisco.

Nice to have

• PMP or equivalent project management certification.
• Experience with Google Suite, Smartsheet, generative AI tools, or LLM technologies.
• Knowledge of metabolism, neuroscience, ophthalmology, and high-content human data modalities.
• Familiarity with machine-learning-enabled drug discovery.
