Machine Learning Manager (Computer Vision)

Location: South San Francisco, CA, United States; hybrid attendance at headquarters at least three days per week

Salary: $247,000–$262,000 per year, plus annual performance bonus and equity incentive plan eligibility

What you will do

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of machine learning scientists developing methods to extract insights from in-vitro microscopy datasets.
• Partner with laboratory leadership to structure assay development and co-develop microscopy assays for genetic perturbation screening, including whole-genome-scale studies.
• Translate imaging assays and methods to computational biology teams integrating microscopy with omics and clinical data.
• Co-develop the product vision for the imaging software platform and support method de-risking and translational development.
• Develop methods for measuring and qualifying microscopy data before model training and inference, including agentic frameworks, VLMs, and self-supervised classification.
• Set strategic roadmaps and tactical goals, align cross-functional stakeholders, and contribute to method and code reviews.

Requirements

• Strong foundation in computer vision and machine learning, with practical judgment about the strengths and limitations of these methods.
• Experience applying computer vision and machine learning to pixel data to extract quantitative features and biological insights.
• Working knowledge of image formation, microscopy fundamentals, and artifacts from instruments and sample preparation.
• Hands-on experience with cellular imaging datasets, including fluorescence, confocal, or label-free microscopy.
• At least three years of people management experience, including solid-line management of multiple individual contributors and at least one Staff-level scientist or engineer.
• Technical leadership, talent development, and strong cross-functional collaboration with experimental and clinical life scientists.

Nice to have

• Experience with temporal phenotyping, spatial proteomics, single-cell or bulk omics, or pooled optical screening.
• Familiarity with genetic perturbation screening, ideally at genome scale.
• Experience using agentic frameworks, VLMs, or self-supervised approaches for imaging data quality control and classification.
• Understanding of neuroscience, metabolic disease, or cancer biology.
• Experience contributing to or shaping an imaging or computer vision software platform.
