Staff Machine Learning Engineer (Autonomous Driving)

Location: Remote within the United States; candidates living within a specific radius of a GM hub are expected to report onsite three times a week. Listed locations include Austin, Texas; San Francisco, California; Sunnyvale, California; and Warren, Michigan. The role may be eligible for relocation benefits.

Salary: $185,100–$335,300 per year, plus bonus potential.

What you will do

• Architect and lead ML-driven map reconstruction systems using camera, lidar, radar, and vehicle-signal data.
• Build end-to-end pipelines covering data mining, dataset curation, labeling, model training, evaluation, and production deployment.
• Develop computer vision and ML solutions for detection, segmentation, 3D reconstruction, and bird’s-eye-view representations.
• Define technical strategy, system architecture, interfaces, data contracts, and integration points with Mapping, Perception, Localization, Simulation, and Platform teams.
• Diagnose system-level issues across data pipelines, models, and production workflows while improving robustness, safety, and scalability.
• Provide technical leadership through design reviews, mentoring, hiring, roadmap development, and subject-matter expertise in ML-based mapping.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience building and deploying machine learning or computer vision systems in production.
• Strong foundation in computer vision, machine learning, or robotics, with hands-on experience designing and training models.
• Proficiency in Python for ML development.
• Experience building large-scale ML data pipelines, including dataset curation, labeling workflows, training, and evaluation.
• Ability to lead complex cross-functional technical initiatives with high autonomy and influence.
• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field, or equivalent industry experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with mapping, localization, perception, robotics, autonomous driving, or mobile robotics.
• Hands-on experience with 3D perception, bird’s-eye-view representations, or multi-view geometry.
• Familiarity with camera, lidar, and radar data and real-world challenges such as noise, drift, and long-tail scenarios.
• Experience with production monitoring, simulation-based validation, synthetic data, or map change detection.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers or leading technical work across multiple teams.
