Industrial Designer (Defense)

Location: Full-time, on-site in Los Angeles, California, United States, with approximately 20% travel for field testing and user interaction.

Salary: $167,000–$248,000 annual base compensation, excluding bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Define and drive the industrial design vision across sensor platforms, ground-based vehicles, airborne effectors, and other dual-use products.
• Translate complex system requirements into intuitive physical forms, layouts, interfaces, and operational workflows.
• Develop concepts, sketches, renderings, mockups, and low- to high-fidelity prototypes for rapid iteration.
• Collaborate with hardware, software, UI, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, product, marketing, and brand teams.
• Guide trade studies involving performance, size, usability, serviceability, manufacturability, and visual design.
• Participate in field testing and operator engagement, using feedback to improve deployment, transport, setup, maintenance, and operation in austere environments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design or a related field.
• 5+ years of industrial design experience focused on ruggedized, outdoor, or mission-critical products.
• Demonstrated experience taking products from concept through production, with a portfolio of shipped products.
• Experience with ergonomics, human factors, operational workflows, environmental durability, and field use.
• Working knowledge of DFMA and manufacturing constraints, with effective collaboration with mechanical and manufacturing engineers.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Nice to have

• Military, defense-adjacent, aerospace, automotive, MIL-Spec, or harsh-environment product experience.
• Experience with mounted or dismounted systems, sensor platforms, vehicle-integrated products, or physical and digital human-machine interfaces.
• Experience with rapid prototyping tools, 3D printing, shop tools, high-fidelity visual models, and build vendors.
• Experience with color, material, and finish specification, user research, field studies, or operator interviews.
• Proficiency with SolidWorks, KeyShot, Adobe Suite, Figma, and engineering PDM software.
