TL;DR
Lead Industrial Designer (Robotics): Driving industrial design strategy for next-generation robotic systems from concept to production with an accent on human-robot interaction, ergonomics, manufacturability, and visually compelling hardware. Focus on developing CAD models and prototypes, defining materials and finishes, conducting usability research, and collaborating with engineering, software, and UX teams.

Location: Pittsburgh or San Francisco, United States

Base salary: $100,000–$300,000 USD per year

What you will do

  • Lead industrial design strategy from initial concept through production.
  • Develop and refine robotic system concepts using sketches, CAD models, and prototypes.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure feasibility, manufacturability, and effective hardware integration.
  • Define materials, finishes, and ergonomic requirements for intuitive and usable robotic products.
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to improve human-robot interaction and hardware interfaces.
  • Present design concepts to stakeholders and leadership while aligning products with the brand.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of industrial design experience and a strong portfolio in robotics, automation, or hardware.
  • Proficiency with CAD and rendering tools, including SolidWorks, Rhino, KeyShot, or Blender.
  • Experience with human-centered design, ergonomic principles, materials, manufacturing, and production techniques.
  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping methods such as 3D printing and CNC machining.
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering and experience collaborating with hardware teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing robotic systems, consumer electronics, or automation products.
  • Familiarity with UI/UX principles for hardware interfaces.
