TL;DR
Supplier Quality Engineer (Automotive Body Exterior): Managing supplier quality for bumpers, fascias, grilles, and related exterior components with an accent on APQP, PPAP, manufacturing process reviews, and launch readiness. Focus on solving dimensional and fit-and-finish issues, leading root cause investigations, and driving corrective actions across suppliers, engineering, purchasing, and assembly plants.

Location: Hybrid role based in Warren, Michigan, with attendance at the Warren Technical Center, a designated work location, or supplier sites at least three times per week. Travel of at least 50% is required, including domestic and international travel in North America. The role is not eligible for relocation benefits.

What you will do

  • Act as the technical liaison between purchasing, product engineering, manufacturing, assembly plants, and suppliers.
  • Ensure supplier compliance with APQP, PPAP, Run at Rate, and part qualification requirements.
  • Review supplier quality plans, Control Plans, PFMEA documents, manufacturing processes, and quality systems.
  • Lead root cause analysis, containment, corrective actions, and verification of quality issues at supplier and assembly plant locations.
  • Support supplier launches, engineering changes, changeovers, current production, and warranty investigations.
  • Improve supplier quality systems through onsite workshops, technical assistance, and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of experience in quality, engineering, or manufacturing.
  • Experience with supplier launch readiness, APQP deliverables, PPAP, Run at Rate, capacity planning, and recovery actions.
  • Knowledge of dimensional inspection, fit and finish, gap and flush, print reading, part measurement, gage design, and GD&T.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes, tooling, equipment, facilities, probability, statistical quality control, and design of experiments.
  • Ability to investigate quality problems, develop technical solutions, manage multiple projects, and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Must be able to work at the specified Michigan location and travel at least 50%. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship; existing U.S. work authorization is required.

Nice to have

  • Engineering degree in mechanical, industrial, electrical, manufacturing, welding, plastics, materials, or chemical engineering.
  • Experience with automotive body exterior components, injection molding, painting, plating, and secondary assembly.
  • OEM or Tier 1 automotive experience and expertise in Red X, DFSS, DMAIC, Lean Manufacturing, product engineering, or manufacturing and tool engineering.
  • Master’s degree or technical and quality certifications.
