TL;DR
Stress Engineer (Nuclear): Developing structural loads, vibration, and dynamic analyses for Kaleidos portable nuclear microreactors and supporting hardware with an accent on structural integrity, transportation environments, and safety-critical verification. Focus on building finite element and explicit dynamics models, analyzing seismic and shock events, and correlating structural test results across manufacturing, transport, deployment, and operation.

Location: 100% onsite at the El Segundo headquarters, El Segundo, California, United States. The role may require extended hours and weekends as necessary. The position involves access to technology subject to U.S. export controls.

Salary: $133,500–$184,800 per year, plus equity.

Company

hirify.global is a startup developing mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors, including the 1-megawatt Kaleidos reactor for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases.

What you will do

  • Develop and own static, dynamic, and transient load cases for reactor systems, support structures, and transport configurations.
  • Perform modal, random vibration, shock, sine vibration, fatigue, and nonlinear explicit dynamics analyses.
  • Define transportation and handling environments for road, rail, air, and sea transport.
  • Conduct finite element analyses and support structural sizing, design margins, and verification planning.
  • Collaborate with structures, mechanical design, thermal, nuclear, and test engineers on architecture, materials, joints, and design improvements.
  • Plan and correlate shaker tests, modal surveys, structural verification tests, and failure investigations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in stress, loads, dynamics, or structural analysis of complex mechanical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of structural mechanics, dynamics, vibration, design allowables, safety factors, and margin-of-safety methods.
  • Experience modeling and analyzing metallic and composite structures using finite element methods.
  • Proficiency with ANSYS, Abaqus, Nastran, or similar FEA tools.
  • Ability to communicate analysis results clearly and work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

  • Experience with aerospace, launch, defense, nuclear, or heavy industrial hardware.
  • Experience with LD-Dyna, Abaqus Explicit, or other dynamics modeling software.
  • Background in shock and vibration testing, test-article correlation, fatigue, fracture mechanics, or bolted joint analysis.
  • Experience defining or interpreting environmental specifications and safety-critical system requirements.
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant engineering discipline.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time employees receive substantial incentive stock options.
  • Medical, vision, dental, FSA/HSA, commuter, life, accident, hospital, and critical illness benefits are available.
  • Eight weeks of paid parental leave for all parents, with additional paid pregnancy leave for California employees.
  • Flexible PTO, catered daily lunch, snacks, drinks, and company and team events.
  • El Segundo headquarters near the Pacific Ocean with in-person collaboration.
