Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Senior Software Engineer (Backend): Building and evolving the storage platform behind B2 Object Storage and Computer Backup with an accent on durability, throughput, and large-scale backend architecture. Focus on designing distributed systems running across thousands of servers, solving performance challenges, and driving reliable implementations from design through rollout.

Location: Remote within the United States, with candidates required to be no more than three time zones away from San Mateo and able to visit San Mateo occasionally.

Salary: $175,000–$200,000 for non-Bay Area locations; $200,000–$225,000 for Bay Area locations.

What you will do

• Lead technical design discussions and create clear design documentation.
• Drive implementation of large backend features for the storage platform.
• Improve data durability, system throughput, and long-term service architecture.
• Shape coding methodologies, engineering standards, and best practices.
• Work across design, implementation, testing, and production rollout.

Requirements

• 7+ years of object-oriented programming experience in an enterprise environment, with a strong backend focus.
• Experience building large-scale software systems running on thousands of servers.
• Professional experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Gemini, Cursor, or Claude Code.
• Comfort with the full software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, and rollout.
• Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and attention to detail.
• Must be based in the United States, within three time zones of San Mateo, and able to visit the San Mateo location occasionally.

Nice to have

• Proficiency in Java or Rust.
• Experience with host-managed SMR solutions and storage performance optimization.
• Knowledge of CPU and I/O performance, hard drive optimization, Linux internals, and file systems.
• Experience building and interpreting models, dashboards, or reports.
