Senior SUE Technician (Subsurface Utility Engineering)

Location: On-site in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, or Ithaca, New York, United States

Salary: $30.00–$40.00 per hour

What you will do

• Lead daily field operations for Subsurface Utility Engineering projects and perform advanced utility locating using electromagnetic induction and Ground Penetrating Radar.
• Interpret utility records, as-built drawings, design plans, and field conditions to identify underground infrastructure.
• Mentor junior SUE technicians, support field training, and coordinate activities with project managers, surveyors, engineers, and clients.
• Prepare field reports, utility sketches, electronic documentation, and organized project records.
• Conduct QA/QC reviews of field data and final SUE deliverables.
• Maintain and troubleshoot SUE equipment, support utility records research and business development, and safely operate company vehicles.

Requirements

• 2–5 years of progressively responsible experience performing SUE Quality Level B utility designation services.
• Proficiency with electromagnetic utility locating equipment and Ground Penetrating Radar.
• Strong knowledge of utility records research, utility coordination, and SUE best practices.
• Ability to read utility plans, engineering drawings, and survey information, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform field work.
• Willingness to travel and work overtime as project needs require.

Nice to have

• Bachelor's degree in Land Surveying, Engineering, Geology, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.
• Experience leading field crews or mentoring junior technicians.
• Experience with DOT, municipal, public utility, or transportation projects.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Carlson, or similar software.
• OSHA safety certifications.
