TL;DR
RF Engineer (Unmanned Systems): Designing and integrating resilient RF communication links, datalinks, antennas, and navigation systems for unmanned air, ground, and maritime platforms with an accent on mesh networking, contested-spectrum communications, and SWaP-constrained system design. Focus on analyzing link performance, developing anti-jam and LPI/LPD techniques, testing multi-node connectivity, and troubleshooting RF, EMI/EMC, and GNSS issues in field operations.

Location: On-site in San Diego, California; remote and hybrid arrangements are not available. Travel up to 25% may be required.

Salary: $110,000–$137,280 annually, plus equity and potential bonuses.

Company

Apium Swarm Robotics develops operational swarm-autonomy software and unmanned systems for commercial and defense applications.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and optimize RF communication links for command and control, telemetry, and payload data.
  • Develop resilient mesh and MANET datalink architectures for mobile multi-agent systems.
  • Design antennas and RF systems within strict size, weight, and power constraints.
  • Engineer anti-jam, LPI/LPD, spread-spectrum, and GNSS anti-jam or anti-spoofing solutions.
  • Perform link-budget analysis, field and flight testing, interference characterization, and RF troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with autonomy, firmware, systems, and flight-controls teams and support regulatory and spectrum compliance.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of RF and microwave theory, S-parameters, impedance matching, link budgets, and transmission lines.
  • Experience designing and testing RF communication links, transceivers, and datalinks for wireless or unmanned systems.
  • Experience with RF test equipment, simulation and design tools, digital communications, mesh networking, and MANET concepts.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and collaboration skills; ability to work on-site and support occasional off-hours activities.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering with an RF, microwave, or communications focus.
  • Experience with UAS, UGV, UUV, or USV systems, SDRs, GNU Radio, USRP, phased arrays, beamforming, or mmWave links.
  • Experience with electronic-warfare-resilient communications, GPS/GNSS anti-jam techniques, tactical waveforms, or DoD spectrum coordination.
  • Active DoD security clearance or ability to obtain one.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on field-tested unmanned systems operating in safety-critical commercial and defense environments.
  • Annual equity package and potential bonuses.
  • Work includes collaboration across engineering, quality, supply chain, and production functions.
  • Post-offer background check and E-Verify employment eligibility verification are required.
