Salary: £28,000–£33,000 per year, depending on relevant skills, knowledge, and experience.

What you will do

• Report on breaking news and summarise complex issues clearly under significant time pressure.
• Generate original story ideas, identify guests, develop creative treatments, and conduct background research.
• Compile and present hourly radio news bulletins across weekday and weekend schedules.
• Produce accurate, impartial, and fair content for radio and digital platforms.
• Collaborate with hirify.global News colleagues and other parts of the corporation to deliver high-quality local journalism.
• Cover early-start weekend breakfast and mid-morning programming for audiences across the North East.

Requirements

• Demonstrable experience as a journalist with strong news judgement and the ability to identify compelling stories.
• Experience reporting breaking news and delivering accurate content under significant time pressure.
• Excellent broadcast presentation skills and a confident, engaging radio news-reading voice.
• Strong writing, research, and production skills with meticulous attention to accuracy and editorial standards.
• Ability to generate original and inclusive story ideas reflecting diverse audiences and communities.
• Applicants must identify as deaf, disabled, or neurodivergent and meet the applicable Equality Act 2010 or Disability Discrimination Act 1995 definition.

Nice to have

• Experience creating content for digital and social media platforms.
• Live production and on-location reporting experience.
• Knowledge of audience behaviour across different media platforms.
• Experience developing creative storytelling formats and treatments.
• Familiarity with the North East news landscape.
