Staff Software Engineer – MBFF Platform / Microservices Architecture (Java/Azure): Leading the architecture and evolution of Java-based microservices and cloud-native APIs supporting GM mobile ownership experiences with an accent on platform scalability, reliability, observability, and DevOps excellence. Focus on designing distributed systems, improving production resilience, applying AI-enabled operational practices, and aligning technical standards across multiple engineering teams.
Location: Hybrid role requiring attendance three times per week in Austin, Texas, or Warren, Michigan, United States. Relocation benefits may be available. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, or J-1 support.

What you will do
- Lead the architecture, design, and evolution of the MBFF platform and core microservices supporting mobile ownership experiences.
- Define scalable API, orchestration, integration, event-driven, GraphQL, WebSockets, and platform strategies.
- Establish standards for reliability, resiliency, observability, security, SLOs, SLAs, and operational readiness.
- Drive CI/CD, release automation, progressive delivery, environment strategy, and production support improvements.
- Apply AI-enabled tooling to code generation, anomaly detection, incident triage, capacity forecasting, and engineering productivity.
- Guide design and incident reviews, mentor senior engineers, and align product, security, SRE, architecture, and engineering organizations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with significant Java and Spring Boot microservices expertise.
- Experience leading architecture and technical direction for distributed systems or platform-level backend services.
- Hands-on experience with Azure, Kubernetes-based deployments, CI/CD, observability, and production operations.
- Strong knowledge of TDD, automated testing, code reviews, engineering governance, and SQL databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL.
- Ability to work from Austin, TX, or Warren, MI three days per week and work without GM immigration sponsorship.
Nice to have
- Experience with AKS, Azure API Management, Functions, Cosmos DB, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, or GCP.
- Expertise with Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, OpenTelemetry, and distributed tracing.
- Experience with GraphQL, WebSockets, service mesh, API gateways, event-driven architecture, and security patterns such as OAuth2 and JWT.
- Background in platform modernization, reliability engineering, enterprise back-office systems, or large-scale customer-facing backend ecosystems.
