Staff Engineer (Java)

TL;DR

Staff Engineer (Java): Building and maintaining high-throughput ad-serving systems with an accent on low-latency performance, multithreaded architecture, and distributed systems. Focus on modernizing legacy Java services, scaling infrastructure on AWS, and mentoring engineering teams to ensure platform reliability at massive scale.

Location: Must be based in New York City, NY. Hybrid schedule: 3 days on-site (Tue/Wed/Thu), 2 days remote (Mon/Fri).

What you will do

• Design and implement scalable, low-latency solutions for real-time ad delivery and auction handling.
• Lead the modernization of legacy Java/Tomcat systems using modern frameworks and best practices.
• Architect multithreaded, non-blocking systems using Vert.x and Spring Boot.
• Drive the adoption of containerized deployments using Docker, ECS, and Kubernetes.
• Design robust monitoring and observability systems using Datadog, Grafana, and AWS-native tools.
• Mentor engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on distributed systems.
• Strong expertise in multithreaded programming and non-blocking frameworks like Vert.x.
• Proficiency in Java and experience with modern frameworks like Spring Boot.
• Hands-on experience with caching (Memcached, Redis) and databases (Aerospike, MySQL, Postgres).
• Experience with AWS infrastructure (ECS, EKS, S3, CloudWatch).
• Must be able to work on-site in New York City 3 days per week.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of Real-Time Bidding (RTB), SSPs, and DSPs.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
• Familiarity with distributed tracing tools like OpenTelemetry.
