TL;DR
Senior Software Engineer (Legal AI): Designing, developing, and operating distributed full-stack cloud services, backend services, and data pipelines for AI-powered legal data solutions at petabyte scale with an accent on reliability, security, performance, and cloud-native architecture. Focus on diagnosing complex distributed-systems failures, leading incident response and root-cause analysis, and improving engineering quality through technical direction, design reviews, and mentorship.
Location: Illinois, United States; hybrid/remote arrangement. U.S. citizenship is required for Public Trust clearance eligibility.
Salary: $126,000–$190,000 annually, plus performance bonus and long-term incentives.

What you will do
- Design, develop, and operate distributed, scalable, secure full-stack cloud services at petabyte scale.
- Build backend services and data pipelines for AI-powered legal data solutions.
- Collaborate with engineering and product partners to solve complex technical problems.
- Troubleshoot production issues and conduct root-cause analysis.
- Lead reliability efforts, incident response, on-call participation, and service ownership.
- Provide technical direction and mentorship while leading design and code reviews.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship and successful acquisition and maintenance of a Public Trust clearance are required.
- 5+ years of experience designing, building, and operating cloud-native systems.
- Strong understanding of cloud-native development, distributed architectures, replication, partitioning, and CAP/PACELC trade-offs.
- Experience with CI/CD, observability, incident response, and end-to-end delivery of complex solutions.
- Ability to diagnose issues including data skew, hot spots, clock skew, and split-brain scenarios.
- Strong cross-functional communication and collaboration skills.
Nice to have
- Experience building high-scale or regulated systems.
- Performance tuning and scalability trade-off experience.
- Familiarity with AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code.
- Knowledge of storage engine internals, including LSM trees, B-trees, compaction, and write amplification.
- Familiarity with FedRAMP compliance frameworks.
