Principal Software Engineer - Backend

Location: California, USA — Remote

Salary: $139,000–$249,260 base salary annually; offers may exceed this range and may include bonuses, stock grants, and benefits.

What you will do

• Provide principal-level technical leadership across backend and platform teams, shaping architecture and technical strategy.
• Design, author, and evolve scalable enterprise backend systems, APIs, and event-driven distributed services.
• Establish service and API standards covering schemas, versioning, backward compatibility, and consumer experience.
• Drive operational excellence through observability, alerting, incident response, post-incident learning, and systemic remediation.
• Influence design reviews, code quality, automated testing, CI/CD, and production readiness across multiple teams.
• Mentor senior engineers and partner with product, data, and platform leaders while remaining hands-on with complex designs, implementations, refactors, and incidents.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with significant depth in backend and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with Python, AWS, API integration, and backend services in production environments at scale.
• Strong knowledge of asynchronous processing, messaging, eventual consistency, fault tolerance, and cloud-native architectures.
• Experience with system design, data modeling, API design, automated testing, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code.
• Ability to influence architecture across multiple teams without formal authority and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.

Nice to have

• Experience with data engineering or data platform ecosystems, streaming pipelines, and data warehouses such as Snowflake.
• Experience with Kafka, Kinesis, or equivalent event-streaming and messaging platforms.
• Background in master data management, identity resolution, data enrichment, or data quality.
• Experience integrating backend services with analytics, search/indexing, or ML/AI platforms.
• Experience working in large organizations whose systems span multiple teams, regions, and business units.
