Backend Application Engineer (Distributed Systems)

Location: 100% remote within the United States

What you will do

• Design and build internal platform services and shared infrastructure used by hundreds of engineers.
• Architect high-throughput, latency-sensitive backend platforms with predictable tail latency.
• Build durable event-processing pipelines and asynchronous job execution platforms.
• Develop caching, rate-limiting, request-shaping layers, platform abstractions, SDKs, and paved-road libraries.
• Establish observability, SLOs, capacity planning, and multi-region fault-tolerant designs.
• Lead incident response, architectural discussions, technical documentation, and mentoring across teams.

Requirements

• Six or more years of professional backend or platform engineering experience.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Hands-on expertise designing and operating distributed systems with attention to consistency, availability, latency, and failure modes.
• Advanced proficiency in at least one backend language such as Java, Go, Scala, Rust, or modern C++.
• Experience with high-throughput messaging, streaming, event-driven architectures, and relational, key-value, document, and search storage systems.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States; eligible applicants include U.S. citizens, Green Card holders, EAD holders, and H-1B transfer candidates. New H-1B visa petitions cannot be sponsored.

Nice to have

• Experience operating Kubernetes-based platforms or contributing to internal developer-platform initiatives.
• Open-source contributions to platform or infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with control-plane and data-plane patterns, service mesh internals, or workflow-orchestration engines.
• Public technical writing, conference talks, or community contributions on platform engineering.
