Principal Software Architect (Data Platform)

Location: Remote within the United States; must reside in and be authorized to work within the United States. Must be willing and able to travel to and work onsite at client, temporary, or corporate locations as business needs require.

Salary: $148,800–$223,200 per year, based on experience.

What you will do

• Architect and modernize a scalable, secure, and cost-efficient data platform built on Azure and Databricks.
• Define modular system designs, service and repository boundaries, design patterns, Git workflows, and architectural guardrails.
• Establish CI/CD, automated unit, integration, and data quality testing, code review standards, and software engineering practices for data systems.
• Enable AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics through reliable, governed, observable, and well-documented data products.
• Own the data engineering technology roadmap, evaluate emerging tools, run proofs of concept, and present technical trade-offs to technical and executive stakeholders.
• Improve platform reliability, performance, developer experience, and Databricks and Azure cost efficiency while mentoring senior and staff engineers without formal management responsibility.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience and a proven track record as a hands-on software architect.
• Deep experience with software architecture, design patterns, modular system design, repository and service boundaries, and enterprise-scale SQL data models and transformations.
• 3+ years working with big data technologies, including Databricks, Spark, and Azure; deep hands-on Databricks and Azure experience is strongly preferred.
• Expertise in Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code reviews, DevOps, telemetry, and iterative delivery.
• Experience operating large-scale cloud data platforms, including performance tuning, reliability, cost optimization, and workload efficiency.
• Must reside in and be authorized to work within the United States; willingness to travel and work onsite as business needs require.

Nice to have

• Experience designing platforms for AI/ML, advanced analytics, or intelligent automation workloads.
• Experience with polyglot storage architectures and enterprise data products.
• Experience in regulated or healthcare environments, including HIPAA, PHI, and data privacy.
• Knowledge of Databricks pricing models, Azure cloud cost drivers, and FinOps practices.
• Experience assessing engineering practices across teams and driving architectural refactors or platform re-platforming.
