Conductor Trainee (Railroad Operations)

Location: Logistics Park Chic, Illinois; reporting to the designated work location is required. Frequent travel and extended stays in the assigned seniority region are required. Training includes travel to Overland Park, Kansas.

Salary: $240.64 per day entry rate; average annual salary of $70,000–$82,000.

What you will do

• Learn and support safe freight train operations through paid classroom and on-the-job training lasting up to 19 weeks.
• Operate track switches and derails, change train routing, and verify switch alignment.
• Switch and spot railcars, determine train makeup, and inspect cars in accordance with federal regulations.
• Communicate operational information, interpret hand signals, monitor train movement, and judge speed and clearance distances.
• Climb on and off equipment, manage hand brakes, connect and disconnect air hoses, and use hand tools.
• Monitor track and passing-train conditions, report problems, and follow safety procedures in a safety-sensitive environment.

Requirements

• Must be able to report for duty at the designated Illinois work location and meet the required travel and extended-stay conditions.
• Must be able to work full-time, at least 40 hours per week, including 24/7 on-call coverage, nights, weekends, holidays, and seasonal conditions.
• Must be able to work in extreme weather, around loud noises, fumes, heavy and moving machinery, uneven surfaces, and at varying heights.
• Must be at least 18 years old by the listed start date and able to read, write, speak, hear, and understand English.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds, climb ladders, use hand tools, walk and stand on uneven surfaces, and visually distinguish required colors and signals.
• Must be able to work without BNSF assistance in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization; visa sponsorship is not available.
