System Design Engineer (Optical Systems)

Location: Milpitas, California, United States; onsite role. Up to 10% travel required.

Salary: $136,300–$231,700 annually.

What you will do

• Define system requirements, architecture, interfaces, and performance specifications for complex inspection and metrology systems.
• Develop optical, electronic, electrical, thermal, environmental, and algorithmic error budgets.
• Lead root-cause analysis and resolution of system performance issues across optical, sensor, electronic, and signal-processing subsystems.
• Set subsystem requirements for illumination, imaging, sensing, control electronics, data acquisition, and signal processing.
• Conduct trade studies and support system integration, verification, validation, characterization, and product release.
• Communicate technical risks, findings, and recommendations to engineering leadership and cross-functional teams.

Requirements

• Master’s or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of experience developing complex systems, preferably in semiconductor equipment, optical instrumentation, electronics, aerospace, medical devices, telecommunications, or advanced manufacturing.
• Strong knowledge of optical systems, imaging, photonics, electronic systems, signal acquisition, sensors, detectors, cameras, and data acquisition.
• Experience translating product and customer requirements into system and subsystem specifications.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with optical inspection, wafer metrology, machine vision, lasers, photodetectors, scientific cameras, or semiconductor process-control systems.
• Knowledge of analog and digital electronics, signal integrity, noise analysis, timing, power distribution, embedded control, FPGA systems, or high-speed interfaces.
• Experience with MATLAB, Python, Zemax, Code V, SPICE, LabVIEW, or similar modeling and simulation tools.
• Experience leading cross-functional technical teams and using AI-assisted engineering tools.
