Staff Software Engineer (Fintech)

Location: Based in California, United States; in-office collaboration is expected 10+ days per month according to team and manager needs.

Annual base salary for positions based in California: $212,000–$265,000 USD, excluding equity, bonuses, and other compensation.

What you will do

• Set architectural direction for the financial crimes compliance control plane, including real-time screening orchestration, resilience, observability, vendor integrations, and decision/data planes.
• Lead complex technical problems such as multi-vendor failover, sub-second decisioning, regulator-grade auditability, and partial dependency failures.
• Translate regulatory obligations and organizational goals into durable engineering primitives, roadmaps, milestones, and execution plans.
• Anticipate platform risks and scaling constraints and lead initiatives that improve reliability.
• Partner with senior leaders across functions to turn regulatory requirements into engineering solutions.
• Establish production ownership standards and mentor engineers while raising design and reliability quality across the team.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building production backend systems.
• Deep expertise in Java or comparable JVM languages, Go, or Rust.
• Experience owning architecture and technical direction for complex distributed systems at scale.
• Strong knowledge of failover, graceful degradation, idempotency, high-throughput real-time decisioning, and resilience design.
• Excellent REST/gRPC API design judgment and working knowledge of Kubernetes, observability tooling, and cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS.
• Experience mentoring engineers and navigating ambiguity in regulated environments.

• Experience in fintech, payments, identity, or compliance technology.
