Staff Software Engineer - Backend (Java)

Location: Hybrid role in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Annual salary: CAD 170,000–220,000, plus potential equity, bonus, and benefits.

What you will do

• Architect, build, and scale server-side features and services in the core Java platform.
• Own engineering initiatives from solution design through deployment while collaborating with Product, Design, and QA.
• Define engineering practices and contribute to technical designs, proposals, and long-term architecture.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.
• Improve automated testing, test coverage, CI/CD strategies, and technical documentation.
• Promote AI coding assistants and AI-native engineering practices while maintaining security and code quality.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software development experience.
• Strong Java and Spring experience building scalable, high-performance server-side systems.
• Deep expertise with Postgres or MySQL, including schema design and query optimization.
• Experience designing and securing RESTful APIs and working with caching, asynchronous processing, and multithreading.
• Knowledge of scalability patterns, security engineering, object-oriented principles, CI/CD, and automated testing.
• Excellent communication skills and proficiency with AI coding assistants.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of identity and access management technologies such as FIDO, U2F, WebAuthn, SSO, SAML, OAuth, and federation.
• Cybersecurity knowledge or CISSP/Security+ certification.
• Experience with React, gRPC, or microservice architecture.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
