Conductor Trainee (Rail Transportation)

Location: Lincoln, NE; Aberdeen, SD; or Sioux City, IA. Must report to the designated work location and remain available for frequent travel within the seniority region.

Salary: $70,000–$82,000 average annual salary; entry rate approximately $259.65 per day.

What you will do

• Learn and perform train operations, freight movement, and railcar switching procedures.
• Operate track switches and derails, connect and disconnect air hoses, manage hand brakes, and replace broken railcar knuckles.
• Inspect trains, railcars, equipment, track conditions, switch alignment, and train make-up in accordance with federal regulations.
• Interpret signals, judge speed and clearance distances, and monitor and report daily work and passing train conditions.
• Work in a safety-sensitive environment around heavy and moving machinery, loud noise, fumes, uneven surfaces, and extreme weather.
• Complete up to 19 weeks of company-paid classroom and on-the-job training, including travel to the training center in Overland Park, KS.

Requirements

• Must be able to report to the designated U.S. work location and work full time, including nights, weekends, holidays, and 24/7 on-call assignments.
• Employment authorization must be available without BNSF sponsorship or assistance, including for H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN status.
• At least 18 years old by the listed start date and able to read, write, speak, hear, and understand English.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds, climb ladders, work at heights, use hand tools, and walk or work on uneven surfaces.
• Ability to distinguish required colors and signals, judge the speed and distance of moving objects, and understand verbal and non-verbal alarms.
• Ability to comply with safety policies, wear personal protective equipment, complete background verification, medical review, and a pre-employment drug screen.
