Optical Design Engineer

TL;DR

Optical Design Engineer (Hardware): Contributing to the hardware sustaining function of optical components with an accent on design, characterization, and testing of PON/DCOM transceivers and coherent modems. Focus on product reliability, lifecycle management, and driving continuous improvements through laboratory experimentation and failure analysis.

Location: Must be based in Ottawa, ON (On-site)

Salary: $94,100 - $150,300

What you will do

• Design, characterize, and test hardware to improve reliability and mitigate component obsolescence.
• Interface with global manufacturing facilities to maintain product yield and drive improvements.
• Plan and execute laboratory experiments for optical components and transceiver modules.
• Develop optical test and screening methodologies to verify long-term reliability.
• Analyze optical, electrical, and environmental test data to determine root causes.
• Provide technical expertise for failure analysis and product support activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Opto-Electronics, or Photonics.
• 3+ years of experience in design, characterization, or testing of opto-electronic devices.
• Hands-on experience with optical lab equipment (OSAs, OPMs, DCAs, OTDRs, VOAs).
• Strong problem-solving mindset for executing investigations and resolving issues.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities.
• Comfortable providing technical updates to team members and external customers.

Nice to have

• Master’s or PhD in a relevant engineering or physics discipline.
• Experience with laboratory test equipment automation using Python, MATLAB, or Tcl.
• Knowledge of Passive Optical Networking (PON) or IEEE/ITU standards.
• Application of statistical and data analysis methods (Cpk, distributions).
