Lead Software Engineer (C++)

Location: Hybrid role based in Morrisville, North Carolina; San Jose, California; or Waltham, Massachusetts, United States. Most roles include some level of in-office and/or in-person expectations.

Salary: USD 170,000–253,000 annual OTE, including base salary and potential commission.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and optimize software-defined storage, virtualization, virtual networking, Linux systems, and distributed infrastructure components.
• Develop and maintain Linux user-space and kernel-space software for storage, networking, virtualization, and infrastructure services.
• Debug complex interactions across compute, storage, networking, virtualization, and distributed systems.
• Evaluate architectural tradeoffs, scalability, performance, and operational reliability across the product lifecycle.
• Drive technical execution independently, identify risks and dependencies, and collaborate with engineering, product, support, and cloud partners.
• Mentor junior engineers, participate in design and code reviews, and contribute to testing, deployment, operations, and customer issue resolution.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in systems software engineering, cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, or storage platform development.
• Strong programming skills in C/C++ and Python, with deep knowledge of operating system internals, concurrency, memory management, performance optimization, and systems debugging.
• Hands-on experience with software-defined or distributed storage and enterprise infrastructure software.
• Strong experience with KVM/QEMU, libvirt, virtio, and virtualized networking and storage infrastructure.
• Experience with storage and networking subsystems, kernel modules, device drivers, and protocols such as NVMe, iSCSI, NFS, SMB/CIFS, or S3.
• Experience with AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI, plus CI/CD, automation, observability, and infrastructure-as-code tools.

Nice to have

• Experience with ONTAP or similar enterprise-scale storage operating systems.
• Experience leading subsystem development or technically complex cross-functional projects.
• Familiarity with cloud-native virtualization and infrastructure orchestration platforms.
• Experience with scalability engineering, reliability engineering, operational excellence, or advanced cloud certifications.
