Head of Data (AI): Leading the systems, datasets, and research to enable real-time multimodal AI with an accent on web-scale data infrastructure and SOTA pre-training datasets. Focus on building multimodal annotation models, curating data mixes, and establishing empirical data quality standards.

Location: On-site in San Francisco, CA

Salary: $250,000 – $375,000 + Equity

AI research lab pioneering State Space Models (SSMs) to build efficient, large-scale foundation models for multimodal interaction.

What you will do

• Lead and grow a team of 6–12 data infrastructure engineers and researchers.
• Set the technical direction for processing, storing, and serving multimodal data at web scale.
• Drive the creation of SOTA multimodal pre-training datasets and annotation models.
• Establish a rigorous empirical approach to training and evaluating data quality.
• Collaborate with modeling and research teams to translate data improvements into better model performance.
• Hire, mentor, and develop engineers and researchers as the organization scales.

Requirements

• Proven management experience directly leading a data team of at least 6 people.
• Hands-on familiarity with web-scale data infrastructure, including processing and storage.
• Track record of building and leading data efforts, ideally for modeling projects.
• Must be based in or able to work on-site in San Francisco.

Nice to have

• Previous experience in modeling.
• Experience building data for a generative modeling organization.
• Familiarity with multimodal data such as audio and speech.
