TL;DR
Staff Software Engineer (Chassis Controls): Building and improving embedded controls software development across the VMEC Chassis Controls organization with an accent on C-based real-time control implementation, first-time quality, and CI/CD + automated testing. Focus on designing durable tools/processes, mentoring engineers, and influencing embedded software architecture decisions before code is written.
Location: Hybrid — report to Milford, Michigan or Warren, MI at least three times per week

What you will do
- Identify high-value opportunities to improve engineering effectiveness across tools, workflows, build processes, and developer experience.
- Design, develop, and deliver embedded controls software in C, including requirements analysis, functional decomposition, implementation, and testing.
- Drive first-time quality through design/code reviews, test strategy, and release readiness.
- Build tools, automation, dashboards, and self-service platforms to simplify and optimize embedded software workflows.
- Improve CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and validation strategies for embedded platform software.
- Mentor engineers and lead technical forums; influence embedded controller software design and architecture decisions early.
Requirements
- 8+ years of full-time experience delivering production software in the automotive industry or similarly complex embedded domains.
- Strong embedded software development expertise using C/C++ for real-time control systems.
- Experience with physics-based control algorithms, diagnostics strategies, and mechatronic systems.
- Proven track record building tools/automation/internal platforms that improve developer productivity or engineering workflows.
- Strong knowledge of automotive vehicle electrical architectures and serial data communications (CAN, LIN, Ethernet).
- Ability to work hybrid in Milford, Michigan or Warren, MI (at least 3 days per week) and travel <25% for the role.
Nice to have
- 10+ years of relevant experience and/or direct chassis controls/mechatronic domain experience (steering, suspension, brakes, driveline, vehicle dynamics).
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and model-based software development workflows.
- Knowledge of functional safety standards (ISO 26262, ASIL, DVUL, ASPICE) and HIL/SIL test environments.
- Experience improving embedded CI/CD, build systems, testing workflows, or release processes.
- Experience designing dashboards/developer portals/workflow tooling and self-service internal platforms.
