Staff Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada; hybrid

Salary: CAD 160,000–220,000 annual base salary, plus equity where applicable, bonus, and benefits.

What you will do

• Architect, build, and scale server-side features and services in the core Java platform.
• Translate strategic business objectives into scalable technical roadmaps with Product Management, Engineering Directors, and Principal Architects.
• Lead technical designs, proposals, architectural decisions, and cross-functional delivery with Product, Design, and QA.
• Develop maintainable software with comprehensive test coverage and improve automated testing and CI/CD strategies.
• Mentor Staff and Senior engineers, lead design reviews, and raise engineering standards across multiple teams.
• Promote AI-native development practices and prototype innovations in device security and software engineering.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software development experience building scalable, high-performance server-side systems with Java and Spring.
• Expertise in Postgres or MySQL, including schema design and query optimization.
• Extensive experience designing, building, and securing RESTful APIs for large-scale systems.
• Strong knowledge of caching, asynchronous processing, multithreading, design patterns, scalability, object-oriented principles, and security engineering.
• Experience with agile development, CI/CD, automated testing, technical communication, and influencing engineering direction.
• Understanding of endpoint security, including TPM, Secure Enclave, MDM protocols, endpoint detection, and how iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS report device state to the cloud.

Nice to have

• Experience with anomaly detection, risk systems, cloud security, identity, authentication, or IAM protocols such as FIDO, U2F, WebAuthn, SSO, SAML, OAuth, and Federation.
• Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, secure coding practices, or CISSP/Security+ certification.
• Experience with React, gRPC, or microservice architecture.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
