Senior Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Vancouver or Toronto, Canada. The role is ideally hybrid from the Vancouver office with three days per week onsite, with remote arrangements available for the right candidate.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate secure, modular, horizontally scalable backend microservices for document and biometric verification.
• Own gRPC/Protobuf and REST/OpenAPI contracts, including versioning and backward compatibility.
• Build high-throughput Apache Kafka pipelines for transaction events and downstream verification workflows.
• Model distributed data access across NoSQL databases, search systems, and caching layers while ensuring consistency, idempotency, and compliance.
• Implement durable multi-step workflows and optimize concurrency, backpressure, autoscaling, latency, and throughput.
• Lead architecture, mentor engineers, and collaborate with Machine Learning, Infrastructure, and Product teams on production integrations.

Requirements

• 8+ years of backend or server-side software engineering experience with production-grade distributed services or platforms.
• Deep Kotlin or strong Java experience, including JVM concurrency, Kotlin Coroutines, and structured concurrency.
• Experience with microservices, gRPC/Protobuf or REST, asynchronous messaging, and Apache Kafka.
• Experience with distributed NoSQL databases, search and indexing systems, caching, Kubernetes, public cloud, and infrastructure automation.
• Experience optimizing memory, thread or coroutine concurrency, connection pooling, payloads, and latency-sensitive workloads.
• Daily practical use of AI coding assistants, with the ability to assess generated code for correctness, security, and performance.

Nice to have

• Experience with identity verification, KYC, biometric liveness, anti-spoofing, or document-authenticity systems.
• Familiarity with Temporal, Cadence, or equivalent durable workflow engines.
• Experience integrating ML models using technologies such as PyTorch, ONNX, TensorFlow, or Deep Java Library.
• Experience with OpenTelemetry, multi-region production services, CI/CD, Helm, and secrets management.
