Tooling Systems Lead

TL;DR

Tooling Systems Lead (Manufacturing Tooling): Provide technical leadership for new and mature manufacturing systems, executing the Tooling Services business plan with an accent on safety, quality, responsiveness, cost, and continuous improvement. Focus on leading tooling problem solving and launch support while coordinating vendors and internal GM teams to sustain standards and resolve tooling issues.

Location: Buffalo, New York (Onsite; expected to report to Tonawanda full-time)

Salary: $96,300 - $135,000 base compensation

What you will do

• Lead implementation of the Tooling Services business plan and coordinate across internal GM teams, tooling engineering, TCM leadership, manufacturing partners, and vendors.
• Support day-to-day tooling needs on the plant floor and provide technical direction/oversight for third-party tool builders and outside vendors.
• Run the daily tooling unscheduled review and drive timely follow-up to resolve tooling issues impacting safety, quality, throughput, and cost.
• Prioritize and implement the Tooling Sufficiency plan by directing tooling engineering resources to meet tooling budget and operational objectives.
• Drive continuous improvement using waste elimination, variation reduction, productivity improvement, and disciplined problem solving; lead layered audits and process checks.
• Provide tooling systems technical support (including cutting tool application and Zoller troubleshooting) and support tooling launch activities (installation, debug, implementation, and improvement).

Requirements

• Onsite role: expected to report to Tonawanda on a full-time basis.
• Ability and willingness to work non-standard hours, including daily overtime and weekends as required.
• BS in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or similar technical field).
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to solve complex technical and operational problems.
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively across multiple functions and levels.
• Experience applying lean manufacturing, standardized work, and continuous improvement in a manufacturing environment.

Nice to have

• Cutting tool knowledge; familiarity with gaging systems and terminology.
• Supervisory/team leadership or technical lead experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience coordinating third-party tooling vendors/contractors and supporting tooling launch and plant-floor problem solving.
• Experience with tooling sufficiency planning, tooling budgets, or tooling resource prioritization.
• Zoller troubleshooting experience.
