TL;DR
Industrial Engineer - Indirect Materials (Manufacturing): Developing and optimizing lean material systems for safe, efficient, and cost-effective vehicle assembly operations with an accent on material flow, part presentation, kitting, sequencing, storage, and delivery methods. Focus on PFEP reviews, plant layout design, labor optimization, launch execution, and solving bottlenecks through continuous improvement.

Location: Onsite in Lansing, Michigan, United States; full-time presence required. Ability to rotate through all three shifts and work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed. Relocation benefits may be available.

What you will do

  • Develop and implement lean material system strategies that improve material flow, safety, quality, productivity, and cost efficiency.
  • Optimize part presentation methods, including direct-to-line, kitting, minomi, sequencing, bulk, and repack strategies.
  • Support PFEP development and conduct station-by-station reviews of delivery methods, material handling, and presentation devices.
  • Create material flow data, part routings, tracking documentation, layouts, and space utilization plans using CAD or similar visualization tools.
  • Support new program launches, engineering changes, material strategy implementation, labor optimization, and route planning.
  • Partner with production, supply chain, containerization, launch, and engineering teams to improve throughput, ergonomics, operator efficiency, and standardized material handling.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience in industrial engineering, lean material strategies, supply chain, material operations, manufacturing, or continuous improvement.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or assembly environment with knowledge of lean systems, material flow, kitting, sequencing, routing, storage, and internal material handling.
  • Experience with PFEP development, standardized work, launch activities, or change management.
  • Working knowledge of work measurement, predetermined time studies, or labor analysis.
  • Must be able to work onsite in Lansing and rotate through all three shifts; GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Nice to have

  • Experience with lean material systems in a high-volume assembly environment.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Teamcenter Visualization, FactoryCAD, or similar layout and design tools.
  • Knowledge of warehouse management systems, material automation, plant material technologies, ergonomic analysis, and workstation presentation design.
  • Project management, time management, and Microsoft Office skills.
