Lead Software Engineer (Java, API)

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada; hybrid work between home and the office based on business and client needs. Periodic weekend or after-hours support may be required for implementations and system upgrades.

Salary: CAD 90,000–140,000 annually.

What you will do

• Design, develop, integrate, and support large-scale web applications, APIs, workflows, and system integrations.
• Lead AI-assisted development using GitHub Copilot and other AI coding tools, and develop AI agents and conversational interfaces.
• Establish coding standards, technical best practices, testing practices, and quality standards across the Agile squad.
• Lead secure development activities, including code reviews, vulnerability remediation, threat modeling, and security testing with SAST/DAST tools.
• Coach and mentor developers, remove technical blockers, and provide technical direction on implementation, estimates, risks, and dependencies.
• Monitor system performance and reliability, support incident response and on-call activities, and collaborate with Product Owners and other Tech Leads.

Requirements

• 8–10 years of progressive IT experience across the full application development lifecycle and systems integration.
• Experience leading and mentoring development teams, with excellent communication and technical leadership skills.
• Expert knowledge of Java and Spring Boot, with strong experience in microservices and API development.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development, AI agents, agent orchestration platforms, LLMs, prompt engineering, AI APIs, chatbots, or intelligent automation.
• Application security experience covering OWASP Top 10, secure SDLC, vulnerability remediation, security scanning tools, and security testing methodologies.
• Experience with React, web accessibility, Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka, REST/JSON, SOAP/XML, JUnit, Mockito, RESTAssured, Jenkins, Bitbucket, and related web technologies.
