Counsel, Tech, AI, and IP (AI)

Location: San Bruno, California, United States

Base salary: $188,500–$282,500 per year, plus bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Negotiate and advise on IP, AI, technology, data use, licensing, cloud hosting, and commercial contract provisions.
• Support implementation of the enterprise AI governance framework, including model inventories, lifecycle controls, human oversight, retention, disclosures, training, and incident response.
• Monitor global AI laws, regulations, guidance, and standards and convert them into policies, playbooks, standards, and training materials.
• Develop an IP strategy supporting product development and commercialization.
• Supervise outside counsel on trademark and patent preparation and prosecution.
• Partner with healthcare, technology, engineering, and computer science experts on complex transactions and AI-driven products.

Requirements

• JD degree or equivalent education.
• Admission to practice law in a US jurisdiction.
• 6+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department, supporting healthtech transactions, SaaS agreements, IP, commercial deal structuring, and science or engineering teams.
• Experience drafting and negotiating complex licensing and commercial technology agreements.
• Experience advising on and leading the development of AI-driven products, including LLMs, machine learning, or agentic workflows, in a complex regulated enterprise.
• Strong communication, organization, prioritization, flexibility, and self-direction skills.

Nice to have

• Degree or equivalent experience in life sciences, data science, bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or computational biology.
• Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment with limited direction.
