Archaeology Field Technician (Idaho)

Location: Idaho; position in Boise, Pocatello, Bend, and Twin Falls. Remote workplace with archaeological fieldwork throughout the Western United States, including overnight and day travel, outdoor work, and possible long-term remote camping.

Salary: $20–25 per hour, based on experience. Per diem is generally at least $50 per day; hotel or lodging is covered separately.

What you will do

• Conduct archaeological pedestrian surveys and excavation-related fieldwork.
• Collect archaeological data using GPS, photographs, site forms, site sketches, and artifact sketches.
• Perform subsurface testing, identify and measure artifacts, and fully record findings.
• Prepare high-quality field notes and detailed documentation.
• Work independently or as part of a project team across field locations.
• Support additional field duties and, when approved, possible post-field office work.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
• At least 6 months of archaeological field experience or field school experience.
• Experience performing archaeological surveys and excavation.
• Ability to work in diverse and difficult terrain, including hiking 5–10 miles per day to and from project areas.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, attention to detail, and detailed note-taking skills.
• Ability to work well with others and contribute proactively to project teams.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a laptop or computer for timesheets, expense reports, and office tasks.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, lift and move materials and equipment up to 50 pounds occasionally, and comply with company safety standards.
• Ability to complete fit-for-work testing, including drug and alcohol testing, and comply with the COVID-19 vaccination requirement, subject to eligible medical and religious accommodations.

Nice to have

• Ability to operate GPS units and navigate using USGS maps, aerial photography, and a compass.
