Sr. Fire Protection Engineer (Nuclear)

Location: Remote in the United States, or onsite in Charlotte, North Carolina, or Westborough, Massachusetts.

Salary: $127,000–$155,000 USD annual national pay range.

What you will do

• Lead complex nuclear fire protection engineering projects from proposal development through execution and closeout.
• Perform and oversee Fire Hazards Analyses for operating nuclear plants, advanced reactors, and other nuclear facilities.
• Evaluate NRC requirements, NFPA 805 programs, licensing bases, safe shutdown requirements, fire areas, circuits, barriers, and post-fire operator actions.
• Develop technical justifications, exemption requests, licensing basis modifications, alternative compliance strategies, calculations, reports, and regulatory submittals.
• Support plant modifications, field assessments, inspections, outage activities, and regulatory audits.
• Interface with utility clients, NRC personnel, project stakeholders, and multidisciplinary engineering teams while mentoring junior engineers and supporting proposals.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, or a related engineering discipline.
• 8–12 years of progressively responsible experience in nuclear fire protection, including at least 5 years supporting a commercial nuclear power plant or nuclear engineering consulting services.
• Demonstrated expertise with NRC fire protection regulations, licensing requirements, 10 CFR 50 Appendix R, 10 CFR 50.48, NFPA 805, NRC Regulatory Guides, NUREGs, and industry guidance.
• Experience performing Fire Hazards Analyses and compliance evaluations for operating nuclear facilities.
• Experience preparing technical reports, engineering evaluations, and regulatory documentation, with strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer license or NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist certification.
• Experience with NRC audits, inspections, licensing activities, Probabilistic Risk Assessment, or Fire PRA methodologies.
• Experience with advanced reactors, Small Modular Reactors, Department of Energy nuclear facilities, or large multidisciplinary engineering projects.
