Backend Software Engineer - Product & Features (Java)

Location: Sydney, Australia; hybrid work with regular collaboration on the Sydney campus

What you will do

• Design and implement backend features within an existing service architecture.
• Build and maintain scalable services supporting user experiences and internal systems.
• Write clean, well-tested, maintainable Java code and contribute to code reviews and pair programming.
• Improve system health through testing, observability, bug fixing, and performance optimisation.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Develop through mentorship, feedback, and exposure to different areas of the engineering stack.

Requirements

• Production experience building backend systems with Java.
• Strong Java fundamentals, including multithreading, service design, and performance optimisation.
• Understanding of distributed systems and experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Ability to take problems from design through deployment with team support.
• Experience with testing, monitoring, documentation, and clean engineering practices.
• Hands-on experience using AI in coding or programming.
