TL;DR
Director, Benefits (Employee Benefits): Lead the Employee Benefits function, designing, implementing, administering, and communicating benefits, wellness, and Leave programs with an accent on global compliance and competitive strategy. Focus on managing vendors and brokers, ensuring ERISA/COBRA/FMLA/HIPAA/ACA compliance, and driving leave management and cross-functional adoption across the organization.
Location: Hybrid (San Diego, CA office 1–2 days/week) and remote work
Salary: $175,000 - $205,000 annually

What you will do
- Provide strategic leadership for the design, development, implementation, administration, and communication of benefits, wellness, and Leave programs.
- Evaluate, select, and manage relationships with vendors, brokers, and carriers; monitor service levels, costs, utilization, and metrics to improve employee experience.
- Partner with benefit brokers to analyze market trends and develop/refine the benefits strategy to attract and retain talent.
- Develop communication and education strategy for benefits, paid time off, financial savings, and Leave programs.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and global benefits laws and regulations, including ERISA, FMLA, COBRA, HIPAA, ACA, and Form 5500 filings.
- Oversee leave management administration and partner with HR Business Partners on complex or escalated leave cases; coordinate SOX compliance with internal SOX and IT teams.
Requirements
- 12 years of progressive experience developing, implementing, and measuring employee benefit programs globally.
- 5 years leading teams of employee benefits.
- Strong knowledge of self-funded insurance plans and benefits regulations (COBRA, ERISA, FMLA, ADA, workers’ compensation, unemployment, disability, paid time off) with multi-state and global employer experience.
- Strong knowledge of HRIS systems and MS Office.
- Ability to analyze data, translate findings into written/graphical reporting, and diagnose problems to implement solutions.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and lead project teams; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Nice to have
- Experience in a high-volume, fast-paced medical device, biotech, or pharmaceutical environment.
- PHR, SPHR, or other HR-related certifications strongly preferred.
