Lead Software Engineer (Node/Java/AWS)

Location: Hybrid, must be based in Manchester, UK (office presence twice a week)

What you will do

• Lead and manage a software engineering squad, overseeing career development, 1:1s, and performance reviews.
• Actively contribute to delivery by writing and reviewing code and guiding technical decisions.
• Manage squad capacity, project planning, and collaborate on roadmaps with Product Managers.
• Define and maintain high engineering standards, including coding guidelines and technical debt management.
• Ensure operational excellence through incident management rotas and a "you build it, you run it" DevOps ethos.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience in full-stack or backend development.
• Proficiency with Node/TypeScript, React, Java, AWS, Kubernetes, and Kafka (or similar).
• Deep understanding of microservices, APIs, and cloud-based deployment.
• Experience in servant-leadership, mentoring, and managing multidisciplinary squads.
• Knowledge of CI/CD, containerization, and security best practices.
• Must be able to work from the Manchester hub twice a week.

Nice to have

• Experience with media, audio streaming, or consumer platforms.
• Experience with SCRUM methodologies.
• Interest in AI-assisted development tooling.
