TL;DR
Staff Systems Engineer, Electric Propulsion (Aircraft Certification): Owning requirements, verification traceability, issue resolution, and propulsion system readiness for an all-electric eVTOL aircraft with an accent on ARP4754A compliance, flight-critical systems, and FAA certification. Focus on authoring propulsion hardware and embedded software requirements, resolving flight-test anomalies, coordinating cross-functional reviews, and closing certification evidence across hardware, software, and controls.
Location: San Jose, California, United States
Salary: $160,000–$220,000 base pay annually
Company
is an aerospace company developing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for sustainable air mobility.
What you will do
- Own ARP4754A-compliant requirements at system, subsystem, and component levels across electrical, mechanical, and software elements.
- Author propulsion hardware and embedded software requirements, including fault detection logic, control state machines, and communication interfaces.
- Lead cross-functional engineering problem reviews, triage system-level issues, and drive formal resolution across hardware, software, and systems teams.
- Manage flight-test anomalies and the flight-critical open-issue portfolio, driving closure for flight operations authorizations and readiness reviews.
- Assess propulsion system readiness at program milestones and compile requirements, verification, risk, and issue status.
- Support FAA certification, airworthiness documentation, means of compliance, qualification testing, and integrated hardware-software-vehicle test events.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering; a master’s degree is preferred.
- 8+ years of systems engineering experience on aviation-certified or certification-bound programs.
- Hands-on ownership of an ARP4754A or equivalent certification compliance workstream.
- Experience managing large requirements baselines in Polarion, DOORS, Jama, or equivalent tools, including configuration control and traceability.
- Experience with FHA, PSSA, SSA, cross-functional problem resolution, and certification schedule pressure.
- Working knowledge of DO-178C and/or DO-254, aircraft communication protocols, verification artifacts, DAL-driven decomposition, and independence requirements.
Nice to have
- eVTOL, Part 23, or Part 33 type certification experience through flight-test or compliance-closure milestones.
- Systems-level knowledge of electric propulsion, power electronics, motor control, and mechanical drivetrains.
- HIL/SIL experience, DER coordination, ARP4761 knowledge, and experience defining FAA means of compliance.
Culture & Benefits
- Pay-for-performance culture with compensation based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
- Commitment to an equitable, inclusive, and diverse workplace.
- Reasonable accommodations are available for qualified applicants during the application and hiring process.
- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
