TL;DR
Senior Mechanical/Thermal Engineer (High-Power Embedded Computing): Owning thermal architecture, analysis, mechanical integration, and validation for complex high-power electronic systems with an accent on CFD modelling, cooling-system design, manufacturability, and environmental performance. Focus on correlating simulations with physical test data, mitigating system-level thermal risks, and delivering robust production-ready hardware.

What you will do

  • Own thermal architecture and design for complex, high-power electronic systems.
  • Perform detailed thermal modelling using CFD and analytical methods, including thermal budgets and worst-case analysis.
  • Develop and optimise forced-air, conduction-cooled, and hybrid cooling solutions across full environmental conditions.
  • Design thermal hardware such as heatsinks, frames, cold plates, and enclosures, while creating and reviewing CAD models and engineering drawings.
  • Lead thermal validation, instrumentation, testing, data analysis, and correlation between predicted and measured performance.
  • Act as the thermal engineering subject-matter expert, influence system architecture, manage risks, and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Significant experience designing thermal solutions for electronics or high-power systems.
  • Strong CFD capability, including tools such as SolidWorks Flow Simulation, and a strong understanding of heat-transfer fundamentals.
  • Hands-on mechanical design experience with strong SolidWorks and CAD skills.
  • Experience with conduction- and air-cooled systems, production thermal/mechanical assemblies, tolerancing, interfaces, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Ability to own designs from concept through production and collaborate with electrical, systems, and manufacturing teams.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement from the Colchester office, United Kingdom.

Nice to have

  • Experience with ruggedised or high-reliability systems in defence, aerospace, or industrial environments.
  • Experience with heat pipes, vapour chambers, liquid cooling, or high-heat-flux systems.
  • Exposure to coupled thermal-structural FEA and relevant environmental or industry standards.
  • Mechanical or thermal engineering degree and Chartered status, or progress toward it.
  • Experience supporting bids, proposals, or early concept work.
