TL;DR
ARU Records Technician (Legal Records Management): Managing centralized onsite active records and delivering, retrieving, scanning, and organizing legal case files across onsite and offsite storage facilities with an accent on records lifecycle control, electronic tracking systems, and document quality assurance. Focus on maintaining accurate physical and electronic files, operating scanning and OCR equipment, conducting inventories, and supporting attorneys and litigation staff with records retrieval procedures.

Location: Washington, DC; work is primarily performed in an office environment, with records handled across facilities in Fairfax and Suitland, Maryland.

Salary: $18–$21.50 per hour

What you will do

  • Manage active paper records and support the full records lifecycle, including tracking, filing, inventory, transfer, and retirement.
  • Record file activity in CIMS, AMMS, and other electronic records systems; research file locations and status.
  • Organize, label, barcode, interfile, retrieve, deliver, box, and inventory legal and litigation case files.
  • Scan and convert documents into electronic folders, generate OCR text, apply file-naming conventions, and perform quality control checks.
  • Work with attorneys and litigation support staff to organize case files and explain records retrieval and maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain scanning, task, and equipment logs; operate and perform routine maintenance on image-scanning equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED plus at least one year of college, relevant paralegal training, or equivalent education and experience.
  • At least one year of experience working with legal documents in a government or private law office.
  • At least six months of experience using a computer terminal.
  • Knowledge of filing procedures, numerical/alphabetical/chronological sequencing, records policies, scanning, and electronic document management tools.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English and comprehend and follow instructions in English.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the required customer clearance.

Nice to have

  • Two years of records management or filing experience in a legal office environment.
