TL;DR

Principal Counsel (Data & Privacy): Leading the enterprise data privacy program and providing legal guidance across the foundation and its subsidiaries with an accent on global compliance, data governance, and complex data-sharing transactions. Focus on translating legal requirements into scalable policies, managing global privacy risk, and integrating AI/ML tools to enhance operational efficiency.

Location: Must be based in Seattle, WA or Washington D.C.

Salary: $285,300–$442,100 USD

What you will do

  • Support a global data privacy program, including compliance, policy development, and data impact assessments.
  • Provide strategic legal guidance on personal data processing, classification, and lifecycle management.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate complex data-related agreements and templates.
  • Collaborate with technical and programmatic teams to implement privacy and responsible AI principles.
  • Develop and deliver effective privacy training across all levels of the organization.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance program maturity and efficiency.

Requirements

  • JD degree and current bar membership in good standing.
  • At least 15 years of legal experience, with a primary focus on data privacy.
  • Extensive experience with GDPR/UK GDPR and at least one major US data protection framework (e.g., HIPAA or FERPA).
  • Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship.
  • Proven ability to manage outside counsel and influence senior leadership.
  • Strong experience in translating legal requirements into practical, risk-based operational guidance.
