Staff Engineer (AI/LLM Systems)

Location: Remote-first or hybrid, with meaningful overlap with the UK working day.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture and delivery of foundational systems across the AI and data platform.
• Build production agent systems, evaluation pipelines, anomaly detection, cost infrastructure, data models, orchestration patterns, and internal engineering frameworks.
• Design, tune, and evolve PostgreSQL systems handling millions of Discord and Reddit messages.
• Shape LLM system quality, evaluation, observability, cost control, model behaviour, and recovery patterns.
• Turn ambiguous product and customer problems into practical systems that ship quickly and improve through production feedback.
• Act as a technical reference point through hands-on implementation, architectural decisions, clear pull requests, and technical guidance.

Requirements

• Approximately 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent depth operating at staff level.
• Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript, Node.js, and PostgreSQL at scale, including indexing, partitioning, query optimisation, schema design, and migrations.
• Experience building foundational systems used by other engineers, teams, or products.
• Production experience with AI or LLM-powered systems, including customer-facing systems tested and iterated using real-world user interactions.
• Ability to work autonomously through ambiguity, make technical trade-offs, write code, and lead delivery.
• Ability to work remotely with meaningful overlap with the UK working day.

Nice to have

• Experience with Vertex AI, OpenAI, Anthropic, agent architectures, evaluation systems, anomaly detection, or LLM cost infrastructure.
• Experience with Temporal or similar durable workflow systems.
• Experience with ClickHouse, BigQuery, or other analytical databases.
• Startup or growth-stage experience with ownership of technical direction.
• Technical writing, talks, open-source work, or internal engineering frameworks used by other people.
