Director of Disability Underwriting – Large Case Unit (Disability Insurance)

What you will do

• Lead the Disability Underwriting Large Case Unit and provide day-to-day leadership to experienced underwriters.
• Handle and oversee complex, high-value disability underwriting cases while maintaining disciplined risk selection.
• Partner with financial advisors, brokers, field offices, and underwriting leadership on complex cases and decisions.
• Manage large-case segmentation, routing, prioritization, staffing, and variable capacity.
• Establish and monitor performance metrics, improving placement ratios, advisor satisfaction, operating costs, quality, and cycle time.
• Lead strategic initiatives, continuing education, and development efforts across Disability Underwriting and New Business.

Requirements

• 10+ years of disability underwriting experience.
• Disability underwriting authority of $15,000 per month or greater at hirify.global or equivalent authority at another carrier.
• 2+ years of informal leadership experience guiding, coaching, and supporting colleagues.
• Knowledge of medical, financial, and occupational disability risk selection, product and pricing, morbidity management, and medical terminology.
• Ability to analyze business data, make sound risk decisions, collaborate across distribution channels, and lead strategic projects.
• College degree or equivalent experience is preferred.

• Experience overseeing a team of underwriters.
• Industry designations or education such as FALU, FLMI, or CLU.
• Experience identifying disability insurance industry trends and analyzing the competitive environment.
