Staff Software Engineer

What you will do

• Take Explorer, a political data exploration product, from pilot implementation to general availability.
• Design and build secure backend services, interactive maps, charts, exportable tables, and responsive user interfaces.
• Establish architecture, testing, observability, reliability, performance, and operational practices for a production-ready platform.
• Lead technical direction and significant initiatives across multiple teams and systems.
• Mentor senior engineers, facilitate design decisions, document tradeoffs, and raise engineering standards.
• Lead incident response, root-cause analysis, and remediation of technical risks and vulnerabilities.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with full-stack fluency and production delivery experience.
• Deep experience with system design, distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, event-driven processing, and OLAP/OLTP data architectures.
• Strong experience with PostgreSQL, SQL, analytical data stores, Snowflake, dbt, Dagster or Airflow, time-series modeling, and Redis.
• Production experience with AWS, Docker, build tools, environment scripting, and observability using logging, metrics, and tracing.
• Experience with secure coding, data privacy, access control, test strategy, and taking products from beta to general availability.
• Hands-on experience integrating AI or LLM APIs, including embeddings, retrieval, or natural-language interfaces, plus geospatial or map-based visualization.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with voter file data or political data.
• Experience in political technology, civic technology, advocacy, or other mission-driven organizations.
• Experience applying AI or machine learning techniques to voter or political data.
