Materials Engineer (Automotive)

What you will do

• Specify technical requirements for transmission sealing, vent systems, and thermal runaway mitigation components.
• Develop written material specifications and release materials for production via drawing signoff.
• Facilitate and interpret laboratory testing, including chemistry, physical testing, and failure analysis.
• Collaborate with suppliers, engineering functions, and plant personnel to drive cost and product improvements.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks to support build programs and problem-solving.
• Drive sustainable material development for plastic components used in battery packs.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
• 2+ years of related work experience in engineering or materials science.
• Strong knowledge of polymeric materials and engineering design principles.
• Must be authorized to work in the US; GM does not provide immigration sponsorship for this role.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment in Warren, Michigan.
• Strong analytical skills for data analysis, design of experiments, and project management.

Nice to have

• 3+ years of related engineering experience.
• Knowledge of elastomers and EV battery systems.
• Experience with plastics and DFSS certification.
• Post-undergraduate training or education.
