Senior BESS Product Safety Engineer

Location: US, Louisville, Colorado; approximately 30% travel across the U.S., with potential international travel.

Salary: $113,000–$141,525 per year, plus an annual bonus.

What you will do

• Guide BESS product development by applying NFPA, IFC, UL, and IEC fire and safety standards throughout the design lifecycle.
• Review mechanical drawings, layouts, CAD models, mechanization diagrams, and safety-critical enclosure designs.
• Provide technical oversight for prototype builds, factory acceptance testing, design qualification, and UL 9540/9540A testing.
• Lead fire and explosion modeling, plume and gas dispersion analyses, and evaluation of evolving fire-safety-code requirements.
• Develop fire-code compliance matrices, permitting documentation, emergency response materials, and technical data packages.
• Interface with AHJs, third-party engineers, certification bodies, customers, and first responders; mentor junior engineers and contribute to standards committees.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 5–7 years of experience in mechanical design and fire protection for energy, industrial, or safety-critical systems.
• Strong knowledge of BESS fire codes and standards, including UL 9540/9540A, NFPA 68/69, NFPA 72, NFPA 855, and NFPA 110/111.
• Experience supporting permitting, testing, and regulatory approval processes.
• Proficiency with mechanical CAD and safety modeling tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Fire Protection Engineering.
• Direct experience with utility-scale BESS and work with AHJs or third-party fire engineers.
• Participation in NFPA, UL, IEEE, or other standards organizations.
• Experience with FLACS, Ansys, FDS, or similar fire modeling tools.
