Senior AI Back-End Engineer

Location: Remote in Canada; daily overlap from 09:00–13:00 EST required.

Target compensation: $90,000–$130,000 annually.

What you will do

• Design and scale asynchronous REST and WebSocket APIs with Python and FastAPI using dependency injection, type hints, and vertical-slice architecture.
• Build multi-agent workflows with Semantic Kernel and integrate OpenAI and Google Gemini models through a provider-agnostic layer.
• Deliver retrieval-augmented generation using Azure AI Search, pgvector, or Chroma, and expose tool-using agents for data analysis and file manipulation.
• Develop PostgreSQL schemas and migrations with SQLModel, SQLAlchemy 2, and Alembic while tuning high-concurrency asynchronous access.
• Own CI/CD pipelines covering linting, type checking, testing, packaging with Docker, scanning, and deployment.
• Instrument services with structured logs, OpenTelemetry traces, and cost and latency metrics while sharing AI-assisted development practices.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience building production APIs in Python and at least 2 years with FastAPI or a comparable asynchronous stack.
• Deep knowledge of asynchronous I/O, Pydantic v2, dependency injection, observability, and structured-output design.
• Hands-on experience with Semantic Kernel or comparable agent frameworks, RAG implementations, and LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Gemini.
• Strong PostgreSQL skills, including SQLModel or SQLAlchemy 2 and Alembic migrations.
• Experience with Poetry, virtual-environment isolation, and end-to-end CI/CD ownership.
• Must be ready for remote work from Canada with daily 09:00–13:00 EST overlap.

Nice to have

• Experience with RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus, or Kafka.
• Experience with Grafana or LangFuse for LLM cost governance and observability.
