Forward Deployed Engineer (OpenAI Platform)

Location: Remote, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; working hours aligned with NA/Eastern time. Occasional travel to customer sites is required, approximately once per quarter.

Salary: 160,000–180,000 CAD per year

What you will do

• Embed directly in customer environments to audit domain logic and data pipelines and own delivery from data discovery through OpenAI API integration and model fine-tuning.
• Modernize legacy SQL databases, monolithic ETL jobs, and data warehouses into low-latency lakehouse platforms optimized for OpenAI embeddings.
• Apply spec-driven development with AI-assisted tools to generate production PySpark jobs, data models, API wrappers, test suites, and schema contracts.
• Architect OpenAI-powered solutions using the Assistants API, Structured Outputs, Function Calling, Realtime API, embeddings, vector stores, and multi-agent orchestration.
• Build evaluation and LLMOps frameworks covering accuracy, latency, hallucination control, token budgets, prompt caching, batch processing, and circuit breakers.
• Train customer engineering teams on OpenAI practices, Azure OpenAI security, AI governance, SDD methodologies, and maintainable MLOps patterns.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience scaling distributed data systems as a Principal Data Engineer, Lead ML/AI Architect, or Enterprise Solutions Architect.
• Mastery of OpenAI Platform APIs, Azure OpenAI Service, fine-tuning, Structured Outputs, Function Calling, the Realtime API, vector stores, and embeddings.
• Experience working directly with executive stakeholders, client business units, and engineering teams.
• Proficiency with generative AI and structured natural-language specifications for AI-assisted engineering workflows.
• Willingness to travel to customer sites approximately once per quarter.

Nice to have

• Software or data engineering experience in enterprise AI or technical consulting.
• Experience migrating on-premises legacy data systems to Azure OpenAI cloud architectures.
• Knowledge of AI governance, content safety filtering, and private endpoint deployments.
