TL;DR

Senior Materials Engineer (Fluids and Lubricants): Technical development and validation of fuels, lubricants, and functional fluids for vehicle propulsion systems with an accent on technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration. Focus on optimizing fluid performance, resolving complex technical issues, and shaping strategic direction for energy and lubricant technologies.

Location: Hybrid (Warren, Michigan). Must be based in the US; GM does not provide immigration sponsorship.

What you will do

  • Lead development and application of fuels, lubricants, and fluids for vehicles and manufacturing processes.
  • Define performance requirements, specifications, and validation criteria for material and fluid solutions.
  • Oversee factory fill, service fill, and specialty fluid activities across global vehicle and propulsion programs.
  • Provide technical leadership for design reviews, root cause investigations, and warranty prevention.
  • Evaluate supplier technologies and formulations to ensure quality, cost, and compliance.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, test methods, and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.
  • 5+ years’ experience in fuels, lubricants, fluids, tribology, or materials engineering.
  • Proven technical problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively across functions.
  • Experience with test methods, validation processes, and data-driven decision making.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship (GM does not provide immigration sponsorship).

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in science or engineering.
  • 7+ years of experience with engine oils, transmission fluids, coolants, or EV/EDU fluids.
  • Expertise in chemical compatibility, contamination control, or failure analysis.
  • Knowledge of automotive standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience engaging with external technical forums or standards organizations.
