PhD Position in Bio-Based Binder Systems for Sustainable Paving Applications (Material Engineering)

PhD Researcher (Material Engineering): Conducting research on the durability and recyclability of bio-based paving binders and composites using physico-chemical and mechanical characterization with an accent on structure–property–durability relationships. What you will do

• Analyze structure–property–durability relationships and recyclability of bio-based paving binders and composites.
• Employ physico-chemical and mechanical characterization methods under complex environmental loading conditions.
• Develop predictive modelling frameworks using multivariate analysis and AI techniques to link material composition to durability.
• Apply spectroscopy, rheology, and microscopy to benchmark bio-based components against petroleum-based counterparts.
• Publish high-quality scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to project reports.
• Collaborate within the ABEL consortium and support the supervision of MSc students.

Requirements

• MSc degree in polymer engineering, material engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
• Knowledge of polymeric materials and experience with mechanical, physical, or chemical characterizations.
• English: Excellent spoken and written proficiency; TOEFL (min. 100) or IELTS (min. 7.0) required if English is not the native language or language of previous degree.
• Location: Ability to relocate to the Netherlands.
• Creative and structured mindset with the ability to work independently and in a team.

Nice to have

• Experience with FE modelling.
• Proficiency in programming tools such as Python and MATLAB.
